Potential 06 Owner, Hello

Postby hybridamp » Sat Aug 07, 2010 5:45 am

Hey guys, I've been a mid-sized Nissan SUV driver for a long time (and Infiniti), but am now planning to get a later model SUV. My previous 2002 QX4 did very well and if they still made it I'd buy another. I'm torn between a Pathfinder and perhaps an Armada, but I've read some pretty rough reviews on the current gen Pathfinder's reliability so I'm confused regarding what to buy exactly...

I'm looking at 06 LE's with Nav and I'll probably be grabbing one with around 60k mi to keep costs down so if anyone has any warnings for me, please let me know since I need it to be reliable up to around 150k mi.

If anyone cares, here was my QX4:

Clutches are very poor but I guess in the US you all get Auto transmission?

Only other major issue is the rear aircon system if it has this fitted? The pipes that run under the car to the rear can corrode and leak, it costs serious money to fix as the body needs to be lifted off to get at them!

So if fitted, check that the rear a/c gets cold and the heater in the rear gets warm, if it all works ok get under the rear and look at the pipes where they rise over the rear axle, particular problem area is under the rubber sleeves so peel them back and check for corrosion. I checked this area on mine and there was minor corrosion but sorted it out, however the a/c was not cold and I took a gamble and bought the car, turned out to be an expensive gamble as there was a leak I had not spotted :-(

CFB, thanks for your insight, I will be sure to check that out on the test drives.

Someone mentioned to me that the fuel sender units are a common problem and something about the transmission failing due to coolant leaking into it? Anyone familiar with those and does it apply to all model years?

Not heard about fuel sender issues but yes the gearbox oil cooler is integrated into the radiator and if it fails the coolant gets into the gearbox and it's night-night!

There are well documented ways to add a seperate cooler though.

I did not know they were integrated, wonder if the certified 100k mi warranty covers that failure... Adding a separate cooler should be a fairly easy solution though if it doesn't. Thanks for letting me know. :)

Welcome. the only possible way that I can see a warranted repair is if your cooling system is part of the warranty. the cooling failing is what causes the mechanical failing. most seem to fail around 60k miles so check carefully if you look at one in that mileage range. when you find one there are easy to follow instructions on how to bypass the rad.

Do the V8's also have the same transmission cooler problem as the V6's? Are all years affected?

The V6 and the V8 both use the same radiator.

Most that I find have 59-62k mi, sort of worried about my luck causing it to fail on the trip home from the dealer. lol
