How can I find out what a harness is for?

How can I find out what a harness is for?
Took off the lower dash under the steering wheel to install some wiring. Found a small plug, maybe 5 conductors, next to the power mirror adjustments. Shows 12v on a gray wire, nothing else. Wouldn't mind using it if it works for something useful. Any idea where I could look for the other end?
It's a tough area to get a photo of but here it is...
Along the drivers side kick panel and right above the emergency brake pedal is a white plug that allows access for either the XM hook up or the Ipod interface hook up. I use it for my Ipod interface. I am able to control the Ipod through the stereo.
Up higher along the wiring harness in the same area is a second white plug. I'm not sure what it is for. Possibly for a towing brake controller?

Is this similar to the plugs you are seeing?

When I take off the lower panel, on the far left is the control for the mirror adjustments. It's just to the right, almost a part of the same harness. 1 plug, maybe 5 conductors, I know there was a red, black and gray. What else would be in the blank spots to the right of the mirror controls? I've got an S trim, if that makes a difference.
