Intermitten rough idle - Where do I go from here?

Postby coferj » Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:48 am

105K, having an issue that just started up with the idle on the vehicle.

Started with the engine idling fine, but lagged in the 1500 rpm range, then perked up, and then would hit cutoff at appr 2350 rpm, due to the "safe mode" or whatever. I had just replaced the MAF with the maxima version back in Sept/Oct, so was able to convince them that it had gone bad and got a new one under warranty. Replaced MAF, left battery discon overnight to clear ecu. Now, engine runs like a top, but the problem has moved to the idle.

When pulling to a stop light, for instance, the rpm will initially be fine, then after appr 10 seconds, the idle will dip to near 600, of course running quite rough. It will drop three times, then slowly return to normal. If allowed to sit, it will do this same procedure cyclically.

Returned home yesterday, cleaned TB intake with TB cleaner, seafoamed the engine, ran after allowing it to sit up for 10 minutes...did not clear up issue with the idle.

I'm sorry for the long post, but wanted to try to offer as much information as possible for anyone that may be able to help or provide an idea of where I can look from here.

Are you throwing any codes? Sounds like it may be a misfiring?

I haven't been able to get by a shop to get the codes pulled. All of this started when I swung by, had them pull codes for my SES and reset. The original codes were 0443 and...I can't remember the second one, but it's the one that points to the bank 1 rear O2 sensor.

Ok, pulled codes. P0443 and P0138. Had these codes before I replaced the MAF, and problems didn't start until last time I had the parts house clear the codes out. I didn't think a bad bank 1 sensor 2 could necessarily effect the engine performance as it is reading the output of the cat?

I would check for any vacuum leaks, clean out EGR ports in intake, and check your carbon canister.
