Odd transmission shift question.

Postby XiBowhunter » Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:20 am

My 2005 pathfinder will sometimes, but not always, shift into a lower gear while going downhill if I let off the accelerator. Is this normal? Is it some sort of engine brake or something?

It will also shift hard back into a higher gear at some point, but it doesn't shift hard all the time.

Should I be concerned?

may not hurt to check your transmission fluid level and quality. hard shifts are never a good thing.

Are you bypassed?

I will check the level when I get off work. Thanks for the reply.

I bought my 2005 used a couple of weeks ago, at 104,000 miles on my pathfinder. How would I check to see if it has been bypassed, and if not, should I do that?

There is a water/oil cooler at the bottom of the radiator, with inlet and outlet on the left/right side of the rad. If there are hoses hooked up to it running from the transmission to the rad, then you are NOT bypassed. If the hoses just got out front to the air/oil cooler, then you ARE bypassed.

Hope that helps. let me know if you need more info.

It might just be the VDC kicking in, unless I'm just an idiot.

maybe even a transmission fluid analysis?

Was it used for towing previously?

I'm not sure, but I don't think it has EVER towed anything. The hitch and wire harness look almost brand new with no scuffs on either one.
