ground strap from muffler bracket to frame

Postby disallow » Sat Jul 17, 2010 9:45 pm

Hey all,

Was greasing up my rear u-joint today when I noticed that the braided ground strap that goes from the muffler bracket to the frame of the truck is broken.

What is the purpose of it? I'd like to fix it, but need to understand how important it is... Do it immediately, or next oil change?

Kinda important, my new 2010 Ram has them too. you can use some heavy gauge wire like if you wire a amp to a car stereo.. and use eye crimps.. if you do not want to buy the OEM strap, all it does it ground.

I have had two of them break off one under the drivers side rear door on the exhaust and the rear near the spare tire. Thanks Canadian Winters!

Why is it important that the exaust system be grounded? And is it not grounded to the engine block already?

Hey there, an old question but does anyone know the purpose of the wire? Thanks.

Air, or in this case, exhaust, when passing through a pipe creates static electricity and the ground straps helps dissapate it by routing it to the chassis. That said, I've removed quite a few of them over the years and never noticed any difference whether they were installed or not. As previously mentioned, you could just attach a piece of strand copper wire to the strap and connect an eyelet connector to it. Or, you can just get a braided strand and replace it, which will handle the constant flexing better. Or, you can simply do nothing and let it hand!

Thanks a lot. I will look into replacing the strand, unless the dealer is absurd in the cost, then some simpler option is in order.
