P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction 1996 Path

Driving down the road sunday the CEL light popped and a second later the engine died. I had it towed home and am now starting to figure it out.
I changed the crankcase position sensor and that code is now gone but it still wont start.

I didnt think the 1996 Pathfinder had camshaft sensors. So I realy need some help. Im stuck without a reliable vehicle. I am realy stuck on what to do next. Need help...

Just noticed this but part of you post says CRANKSHAFT SENSOR and the other line says Camshaft position sensor?? I just replaced my front Camshaft sensor and it was code PO 0345 and that fixed mine. Someone should be around in the AM. Someone said something about if the oil level is too low some of these have a safety switch so they don't run? Probably not it but thought I would tell you.Make sure that plug is all the way also and that green clip on the plug is in the right position for it to be secure

Right the code I get now is for the Camshaft sensor. I was getting two codes so I started with the chearper one first. Hoping to fix it.
Now for the Camshaft code. I cant just replace the camshaft sensor on a 1996. It has the sensor built into the distributor. So I need better help before I drop 250 for a new distributor.
Ill check the oil when it warms up a little more. I need a oil change but I didnt think it was low.

I figured out its the timing belt. I just replaced it and the water pump last month. So I have to do it again. Not sure if its the belt or the tensioner that is bad.

Got the new timing belt on this evening and almost buttoned up. The belt tensioner spun the bearing and destroyed the belt. Ill have it finished tomorrow.

Glad to hear you got it running. I've done my fair share of VG timing belts over the years. These days I pick up a Gates "Timing Belt Componant Kit w/ Water Pump" from Rockauto.com. It comes with a new belt, tensioner and water pump and the parts are of good quality. I also throw in a new thermostat, drive belts and front seals, all of which I use genuine Nissan parts. On older VG's, I also reseal the welsch plug on the front of the right bank cylinder head if it shows signs of coolant seapage. You have to keep in mind that it'll be 60,000 or 105,000 miles (depending on which belt is used on that particular engine) before that belt is due for replacement again, so you'll want related parts to last that long, as well. Falls under the "do it once and do it right" catagory.
