Manual transmission leak

Postby NolaParamedic » Thu Nov 07, 2013 7:22 pm

so i have a '95 XE 4x4 with a 5 speed and I have noticed that i am losing the clutch fluid, its a relatively slow leak since i use it for a daily commute truck with an average 60 miles a week and am having to fill the reservoir every couple of weeks. I can't find any noticeable leaks, but i can tell when it's getting low b/c it no longer has that burnt oil smell while i am driving, and i was wondering if their was anyone who might have some ideas of where to start looking to track down the leak. Usually it's the slave cylinder that leaks; try peeling back the dust boot and see if brake fluid leaks out. If not, they can sometimes leak out of the back seal of the clutch master cylinder.

so it appears to be the source of the problem when i looked under last night, the bell housing is covered in an oily substance and there was a tell tell drip coming from where the rubber hose meets the slave cylinder so looks like i will be fixing that this week end. thanks for your help!

i think i have this problem. My 1990 wont shift after getting progressively harder to shift for a few days. I'm suspecting a lack of clutch fluid.

So two quesions:
- what *is* clutch fluid (ie. what do i buy to replace it) and
- assuming this just happened, can i add more to the resevoir and just expect i might work? (until i can get it actually repaired so it wont leak again)?

The hydraulic clutch system uses DOT 3 brake fluid...the same stuff you put into your brake master cylinder.
