2005 license plate light replacement

Postby martyf250 » Sat Jun 08, 2013 8:19 am

How do I access the light to change the bulbs. Both flickered ad would stay on with a good bang on the tailgate but are out now. The chrome cover seems to be in the way. Thanks

You're supposed to remove the interior panel from the rear hatch to access the bulbs. I know...it's a stupid design that could have be designed better!

I was able to get a Philips driver to make enough contact and loosen the screws, from the outside. The angle wasn't very good but it was enough. Here is a previous thread and some crappy pictures I took.

Replacing license plate lights on an R51 is a TOTAL P.I.T.A!!!! You have to disassemble the ENTIRE interior lift gate panel and the multitude of bolts, screws, and clips that make up the entire assembly. Be sure to replace the license plate bulbs with LED bulbs so you never have to do this again. Secondly, while you have the chrome license plate bezel (the piece that connects to the outside of the liftgate above the license plate) removed, do yourself a favor and run a thin piece of rubber tape along the edge of the chrome metal bezel to keep the bezel from digging into the body paint over time due to driving vibration. Grab a beer, and have fun tacking this project. Be sure to have new panel clips on hand cause you will break at least a handful. Good luck!

On the 05-07 models, you have to remove the interior finisher on the rear hatch. On 08-and-later models, you can get to the screws for the lamp from the outside so you don't have to remove the interior finisher.
