Cam tensioner going off??

Postby coom1986 » Mon Aug 11, 2008 3:15 am

Hi every one, ive got a new 2008 Pathy SE, Had it for 6 months now and am loving it. I saw a guy on Youtube testing his 06 Xterra to see if it had a cam tension problem. I then saw that a couple of pathy owners describing the same problem.
The noise they described seemed to be a high pitched turbine type sound roughly above 2500RPM.

I then listened to ma engine which only has 8600 km on it and it had the same sorta sound above 2500 RPM. just wondering if any one else experienced the same sound.

and what do you guys think, could it just be an engine characteristic sound or the cam tensioner actually getting loose.

i know the sound your talkin about at start up, thats not the one. Actually if you let the engine warm a bit and then strart reving the engine slowly. Try listenin to a slight high pitched whining type of sound. Sound something like a turbine but very low.
Just wanted to know if its normal on all pathys and is actually how the engine is supposed to sound or if its a cam tensioner going off.
The reason im askin this like i mentioned earlier was cos i heard it on a 06 xterra which i found on youtube. Try searching for "x terra cam tensioner Going Off" and tell me if you hear the same thing please.

ya it makes the whining sound you can hear when going down the road the dealer tells me its nothing but im skeptical so i guess ill know something is wrong if it dies :D but other then the odd sound the motor makes it works just fine it charged up 4,000 feet to yosemite on saturday without a problem

According to the local Nissan dealership any of the VQ40 engines built after about mid 2007 don't have the chain tensioner wearout problem as the tensioners installed after then were of the upgraded type.
