R51 With 285/70 17 Experiences

Postby MikeYQM » Tue Feb 09, 2016 3:48 pm

Good Day!

First I'd like to thank everyone for the great resources on here. I'm looking for advice: I'm looking to install 285/70 17s on my 2008 SE. From what I read I can do this with a PRG Mini lift and some fender melting. What I'm curious about is what the effect that has on performance? The Duratracs in that size run about 16 lbs heavier per tire over the 265/70 17 I have now. Is it a huge impact on performance (engine stress/milage) or is the ~1" size difference not worth the weight increase?

Hoping some of you have been running this size tire and have experience.

Thanks

That size wont lower your mpg that much maybe 1-2 max but what you have to look at is tread pattern or how aggressive the tread is.

I've been running 285-70-17 toyo open country at2 for the past few years. I believe they weigh 56lbs each. Anyway, I noticed about a 2mpg loss.

Do yourself a favor and buy the XTP intake manifold spacer. That and the airlift bags are the 2 best purchases you can make for the R51. That spacer shifts the torque curve and you won't notice the extra size and weight on the tires when you step on the gas. It makes a noticeable difference, but it still won't eliminate the mpg loss

Thanks for the info. I was planning the Airlift and added to manifold spacer to the to do list.

Is there any chance these tires will fit before I get the lift on? They are on sale and would like new tires before I can get the lift delivered.

Yes they will fit but you will need to trim or melt the plastic.
Even with lift you will have too.
