R51 OIL LEAK

Postby JAHBLESSINGS » Wed Feb 19, 2014 5:31 am

i put my truck on the lift to do my oil change and tire rotation. i noticed the brush gaurd under the bumper has oil on it right below the filter. i say what the heck is this. i use a flash light and see that the oring behind the cooler is leaking (cooler bolt size 22mm). so the part from nissan is like $5.00 or so. its on it's way to me to resolve this oil leak issue. i've done some research and see that it happens to all r51's around 109,000 mile mark and it's easy to change. get ready guys for yours to start leaking also. here is a thread i found about it.

if the bolt that the oil filter screws onto comes loose, it will cause the o-ring to leak.
the bolts may come loose from removal of an overtightened oil filter, as the tightness of the bolt is what seals the o-ring between the cooler and the block.

Old one orange. New one is black. I did not get any photos of the progress since I had my shop foreman do it. Took him about 20 minutes since the lines of the cooler do not have to be removed. The oil filter fitting is really tight so a good wrench is a plus.

Oil cooler "O"-ring is Nissan P/N: 21304-JK20A.

Thanks! Couldn't find it for the life of me. Every site that had a schematic of the oil cooler didn't have the gasket on it.

You can get them on the aftermarket, as well. I know Dorman and Victor Reinz has them.
