R51 timing chain, getting gas and coffee!

Postby Kestral » Sun Jul 31, 2016 6:58 pm

I was getting gas today and a coffee and a R51 Pathfinder pulled in to fill up it had that farmiluar "supercharger" whine and I figured it did not have a blower! "O" boy time for a timing chain! I was going to keep my mouth shut but I felt I should see if this guy knows what is wrong.

He came in the fuel store to get a coffee as well so I asked him do you know why your Pathfinder makes that noise? He replied no as a matter of fact the noise has been getting louder the last year or so? Long story short I explained to him what is most likely going on.

His R51 is a 2006 with 95,000 miles and he said it has been a great truck with few problems. He did know about the radiator bypass he did that at 50,000 miles. However he had know idea about the timing chain issue. Anyway he said he loves the truck and even though it's going to cost him some good cash to fix he feels it's worth it to keep it.

Bumping this a few months out, but do you know what years are affected by the timing chain issue? I'm in a 2011 with 71k on the clock.

There were issues with the stamping of the links of the upper timing chains when they were manufactured by Borg-Warner due to worn tooling. This caused the upper chains to cut through the plastic tensioner faces, which created a "whining" noise. It was addressed in Nissan technical service bulletin NTB09-128, which you can download from here:

What steps should I take to try and get them to cover the repair?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

If you are past your 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and don't have an extended warranty to cover it, they probably won't. If you are a real good customer, your dealer might Goodwill warranty it. You could call their customer service hotline ! 1-800-NISSAN-1 and complain, but they probably won't do anything unless you have the problem confirmed by a dealer. Typical repair runs $1200-$1600 at independent shops, depending where you live and if you have any "extras" added to the job, like water pump, thermostat, etc.

Nissan told me to go F myself because there is no recall on the part and they are not aware of the chain issue (yeah right).

I have 2 quotes from Nissan dealers $2248 and $1500 they both include the water pump.

The one quoting me the $2248 is the dealer we bought it from and there service department has always seemed shady.

I have a mechanic that does great work but his price is right around the $1500 range, so I think it is best to have a Nissan dealer deal with this issue.

Thoughts?

If I go to an independent shop what parts should I have replaced?
Like is there a parts lists I should give them.
I am just assuming the shop won't know exactly what to order without pulling it apart.
Mine has been making the whining noise and I plan on having it repaired in the future. To me it is cheaper to repair the timing chain then a new car payment. lol.
Thanks!

The Nissan service bulletin NTB09-128 lists the parts to do the basic repair. You can download the bulletin from here:

One change I would make from what the bulletin lists is using Permatex Ultra Grey Rigid High Torque RTV rather than the Three-bond sealant. It's essentially the same stuff, just that the Permatex comes in a handy caulk tube.

After what's listed on the bulletin, you have options that some recommend, depending on mileage, such as water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, primary tensioner and primary timing chain. The guides are usually in good condition.
