Rear final drive side oil seal replacement.

Postby Lord Farquaad » Tue Apr 18, 2017 11:03 pm

I've noticed a few drops of oil on my garage floor, under the rear differential. It is intermittent, meaning if I wipe it up, I might have a few drops again in a few days. Funny thing is, in the basement at work, where the Pathy is parked at an angle, there is absolutely no oil on the floor.

Anyway, got in underneath and noticed wetness on the left side of the differential. Scoured these pages and found the threads about the breather being blocked. Mine is not, so it has to be the left side oil seal.

I have the manual and read through it on how to replace the seal. Some parts are slightly cryptic. Has anyone here attempted the replacement on their own? I can save myself a few bob by tackling it myself, but if it is too much of a PITA, I would rather just take it to Nissan.

2 Things that bother me is the removal tool for the side flange and the note on not re-using the side shaft bolts. Are these bolts stretch bolts that they caution on re-using them? And is the flange removal tool necessary or can it be popped out with some skilled blows with a hammer?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Before changing seals, check the breather tube and make sure its not plugged. The pressure can make a few drops leak out.
