Hmm, can't seem to embed the video using Flickr. I tried posting direct links, but they won't work because the video is "private." I'll use this as a placeholder until I can get home and upload the HD footage to vimeo. Unless someone has another suggestion. I'd really like for it only to be accessible via a direct link rather than a free-for-all type thing.

EDIT: okay, hopefully this will work. Here's the link to the OEM struts. I kept lifting it & it kept stopping. They were worthless at that point.

And here is a short video with the new struts.

Thanks for all the good advise, I just ordered the:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#9416k149/=akdtbx
with 225lbs of force. If it doesn't work I'll let you all know.
The only thing worse than opening the door in 0F is opening the door in 0F and 10,000+ ft of elevation!!

Anybody tried 200lbs? I wonder how well 200 lbs will work.

I don't have the McMasters but they are 206 lb. and the work perfectly.

Does it make the gate close any softer or does it still slam as you close it?

Ordered from McMaster. At 5100 feet, and hovering at 0F recently, my 'rear hatch' was more of a 'rear deathtrap'.

this is a great thread.
in the process of replacing the rear hitch springs.
I like how many of you researched and have provided useful links and part #'s.
I get a discount for McMaster products, cuz I work there :)
I've been searching but couldnt find a part # I thought would fit until I read this thread. should of came here first.
sorry, I didn't read this in January as I could have helped some of you save $$$.
thanks for helping me out.

I'm sure it still slams, but it has since day 1. It's become habit for me to close the last foot or so very gently. I'm still interested in that automatic hatch closing mechanism though.
Im intrested in the automatic hatch closing mechanism as well. Any update to finding out about that?

What you're thinking about isn't what we're talking about. You have an 08, so you should already have it. It doesn't automatically raise/lower the rear hatch like in some minivans. We're talking about the mechanism at the latch. Our newer models have a mechanism that pulls the rear hatch closed if you gently let the hatch down. On older models, you have to kinda slam it.

Installed mine 2 weeks ago, and my hatch is like a jack in the box, I love it. I did, however, come home the other night to find my wife dangling by one arm from the fully open hatch looking terrified. So success all around.

New rear hatch lift struts=65 dollars
Install rear hatch sturts=20 minutes
Seeing you wife dangle from the lifted hatch=priceless.
