I fired it up today!!

The good: It runs like a sewing machine at idle

The bad: There's some sort of knock at higher rpm's. There's a slight coolant leak and a slight oil leak. Must find both. Obviously the greatest concern is the knock. It also cranks slow at start up.. Odd

Re: Another question

My R50's (99 and 04) have both had plenty of rusty exhaust issues. Mostly annoying heat shield rattles. Those I fix by bending and/or removing the offending tin. Both also had the pipe rust to the point of failure just ahead of the main/rear muffler. I repaired these myself. I just used a dremel, so...

mine??...oh it's been done for a while now. I did finally take it to a knowledgeable Nissan guy due to the missing under hard accelleration. It would start fine, idle fine, run fine and hold a steady speed smoothly but when I hit the accellerator hard it would miss as it was accellerating. Come to ...

You should replace it ASAP though. My 99 was missing the cargo area dome light cover when I bought it and I had to rebuild the motor 40k miles later.

I thought I'd be firing it up today but a few annoying things slowed me down. Then I stripped the distributor mounting plate. I think it's made of butter. I'll deal with that tomorrow. Anyway.. Good excuse to sit in the pool and listen to a dramatic extra innings walk off win by the tribe!

I'm guessing that's a junkyard item. The shop manual calls it the luggage room lamp assembly so I'm guessing if you do find it for sale new it's the whole assembly.

Long overdue update

I've been plugging away as time permits. I got the camshaft and journals machined. I cleaned up the block, the pistons, the oil pan etc. I put new rings on the pistons, honed the cyl walls and basically buttoned up the bottom end. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dzfTqoqgJo0/U9ktcDHnq6I/AAAAAAAADz...

I now have the hood completely off, so boom clearance isn't an issue. Where on the motor did you attach the lifting chains? I had the heads off already which may have made it easier. I attached one side to the (very stout) alternator bracket? Or maybe that was the other side? AC compressor bracket?...

Woohoo! Looks like progress! Are you having clearance issues with the hoist you're using? I rented one from sunbelt for $25 (for 24 hrs) and it it pulled the motor out no problem. I thought I'd have to remove the front wheels and drop it down low, but no, it was perfect. Also, that hoist fit in the ...
