Stall while driving. Already replaced ECM Relay

Postby StevenSch02 » Tue Jan 26, 2016 12:42 pm

2005 Pathfinder LE.

Short version: It stalls while driving (at any speed). Lose power steering, power brakes, engine shuts off. Has trouble restarting.

UPDATE: I took it for a drive with the scan tool hooked up. I got it to almost stall after 15 min, and check the SES code. It came up with 3 codes, but all 3 were exactly the same. P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A. Circuit Malfunction. So, now gotta look into that.

Replaced:
- New battery
- New ECM Relay
- New Negative Battery Terminal Connector (old one was wearing out and kinda loose)

Alternator and starter pass testing.

Could be the following be related? The car has had a SES light for quite a while now, but would drive fine. Finally tested as P0430 & PO420. I have a feeling it needs new cats based on how common these codes are, but would that solve the problem of stalling while driving? It can be pretty dangerous if it stalls while she is trying to turn across traffic.

Well, the crankshaft position sensors and cam position sensors have been known to fail and will cause stalling and no start conditions, as well as set catalyst efficiency codes. I would address the stalling issue, first, which probably means replacing the sensor, erase the codes and then see if the catalyst codes return before thinking about replacing them. One recommendation I have is to stick with genuine Nissan sensors; a lot of people have had problems with the aftermarket sensors on the market.

Thank you.

I replaced the crankshaft position sensor with one from Nissan, and so far so good.

Also check battery terminals - corrosion or loose connections can cause random stalling as well. Seems like you got it figured out, though
