V6 whining noise

Postby houseofgrafix » Sat Jan 11, 2014 5:00 pm

Hey crew
Got a 2007 V6 4.0 pathfinder with 118,000 on it.
I just got it so noise are all new to me. It has a whining noise.
SEEMS to get a bit less when it warms up.

When we replaced the radiator I started it with the belt off and there was still a whine.

timing chain?

anyone else have had this problem?

thanks

It could very well be the noise that occurs when the upper timing chains have worn through the upper tensioner "feet." I usually compare the noise to the sound of a bad power steering pump. You can find videos on YouTube with which to compare your noise. There's a TSB on the issue (if that's what it is) instructing to replace the upper (or, "secondary") timing chains and tensioner feet and provides the list of other parts you'd need (seals, etc.). Depending on the amount of wear, you may need to replace one or more of the guides. When I do them, I recommend replacing the primary timing chain, as well, along with a new thermostat while I'm there. It's also a good time to replace the radiator if you still have the original which has been prone to cooler failure.
