97 rear end rock violently when i maintain speed

Postby towjoerea » Sun Aug 30, 2015 12:37 pm

I think its the bushings but when im maintaining speed the rear end starts rocking left and right causing the whole truck to rock and it stops when I either accelerate or downshift and decelerate. im tinking bushings??? maybe shocks? sway bar? im afraid its going to rip the rear end apart.

It's probably a combination of all 3 if none of them have been addressed in the past. Suspension/stabilizing components work together in keeping the movement minimized.

so do they have rebuilds for the bushings or do I need a new rear end?

Yes, the bushings (trailing arm) themselves are available or new arms with the bushings installed. But, they require a press to be removed and pushed in if you get just the bushings. All the other bushings are readily available.

They refer to it as the "death wobble." It's often caused by rear suspension link bushings that have split. Polyurethane bushings are available if you are going the "replace bushings" route, but they can be a bit of a pain. I usually go with new links from Dorman which you can pick up @ Rockauto.com and have a lifetime warranty. One note: often the bolts will seize to the metal sleeves inside the bushings which may necessitate having to cut the links out, rather than just unbolt them. I would recommend you get new bolts and nuts from Nissan. Of course, the entire suspension should be inspected before doing anything to be sure what needs to be addressed. If you are replacing shocks, KYB Gas-a-justs and Bilstein HD's are good options.
