V6 owners chime in

Postby Kestral » Wed Jun 07, 2017 4:21 pm

I was just wondering how many V6 owners have to add oil between oil changes? My V6 does not use a drop not even if I tow my 5,000 pound camper. A few other local people I have talked to who have this V6 in either Pathfinders or Frontier pick up trucks report similar results.

Pretty tight here too.
No need to add a drop even in summer use..
Of course my easy is fairly gentle (The R51 is my long hiway trip SUV and the XTERRA the local runabout but come ot think about it.. that one is pretty tight too)

I had to delay the oil changes on my two R51's due to too much going on. Thankfully, I use synthetic! With 12,000 miles since the last oil change on my 205,000 mile, 2008, it was down about a half quart. My 170,000 mile 2006, which had 10,000 miles since it's last oil change, I had to add about 1.5 quarts over that time... However, the 2006 has a slight oil leak at the front crank seal and the top of the front timing cover, so, it most likely leaked the oil rather than burned it.

With 12,000 miles on your last change and only needing to add a half quart! That would be good for a new car let alone one with over 200,000 miles. Nothing wrong with that motor! Heck sounds like both are in great shape. Not that it always matters if you use some oil my father had a Ford van with a 460 V8 that drank 2 quarts every oil change since new and it still drank 2 after 200,000 miles.

It does seem that VQ40's are real tight when it comes to oil usage unlike the VQ in the 350/370Z many of them drink oil?

Some of the VQ 3.5L engines had some issues with burning oil due to the oil control rings not making contact with the cylinder bore walls, which had a slight taper from the factory. Nissan later updated the rings, but, of course, that requires tearing down the motor to remove the pistons. There have also been a few reported cases of 3.5L and 4.0L VQ engines which burned oil due to the scoring of the cylinder walls caused when the upstream catalytic converter substrate broke down and bits of it got ingested into the combustion chambers during the EGR process, similar to what happened to many of the early Nissan QR25DE engines in the Altima and some Sentras.
