radiator problems or not?

Postby Col R » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:42 am

I recently bought an '05 Pathfinder with 93K miles. It is in very good shape but I was unaware of the radiator leaking into the transmission problem.

Right now I have had it checked and there is no problem.

Is there a time when you can know the radiator will not be a problem?

Or should I go ahead and do the bypass anyway?

Wonderful info here! I have spent all morning just trying to catch up.

Thanks to all.

do the bypass. It's simple, and great peace of mind.

yep, some of the best insurance you can get, especially at your mileage...........
spend an hour of time, no parts at all, and potentially save something like 6 or 7 thousand dollars, not to mention all the aggravation that can go along with a repair like that 8)

After hours of reading on this subject, this one post is what truly helped me.
bellwilliam wrote:just did the bypass. easier done than describing it. but I did not use any additional parts. no coupler, no hose clamp (reuse original), no zip tie.

you have 2 hoses -
hose A - from external transmission cooler to radiator (passenger side)
hose B - from radiator (driver side) to engine block.

take hose A off radiator (passenger side) and plug into engine block
take hose B off engine block and plug into radiator (passenger side), forming a loop within.

reuse all the old hose and clamp. length is perfect.

I agree....and would do it today! simple and quick to do. I have a 2006 PF. Had 2 hoses going into the bottom of radiator. I pulled them off and joined together with a 3/8" barbed connector and clamped off the radiator connections with 5/16" rubber vaccum caps. Used 4 screw type clamps to secure it all.

thanks guys.
I assume that any of these modes require the skid plate and lower rad shroud to come off?

You assume incorrectly. I did mine without removing anything, but remoiving the skid plate would help.

I removed the skid plate and the front plastic trim..didnt remove the lower radiator shroud and had plenty of room. I had a couple of hose clamp pliers, but not really needed.

Could not stand it any longer! Went out this AM and did the bypass. No problems. The only thing that had me confused was the idea that the tube came from the "engine block." I could not find any reference to that. Once I got into it, I found that the two tube nipples were secured to the block, not from the block.

thanks guys. The fluid loss was small and looked good. I am going to have it flushed next week to make sure of the condition.
