Transmission temps

Postby oreogaborio » Thu Oct 11, 2012 9:39 pm

Just wondering what kind of temp range you guys are seeing. I've got a Bully Dog GT and monitored my transmission temps while towing heavy (4-5000lbs?) from Boston, MA to Millville, New Jersey a few weeks ago.

Normal non towing temp is around 150*F
Towing heavy, at times, I saw upwards of 215-220*F in hilly terrain if I wasn't careful but for the most part I was closer to 200*F.

Normal? Too hot for comfort?

I've done the radiator bypass. Wondering if I should consider installing a fan on the stock trans cooler or perhaps add an additional one? I'll be towing 4000 lbs for an hour or more fairly regularly... bout 14-18 times per year.

I think the hotter your temps are, the sooner your oil change intervals have to be. http://www.digi-panel.com/trannyoil.htm and also http://www.txchange.com/heatchrt.htm

do you have any temp readings when driving in the city, or during traffic (no towing)?

Luckily I don't have to deal with much traffic.

Guys, I'm bypassed and getting ready to install 9" Procomp fan on the existing external factory ATF cooler to help it cool the oil when transmission is under load but truck is not moving fast (hence no air movement through the cooler). I have a pooler fan, which I'm thinking of installing behind the external factory cooler (there is enough room). I figured it will be the best way to go, since behind the cooler it will not be blocking any air when moving and when the temps go up, it will pull air through it, cooling down the system. Do you see any potential problems with this set up going behind the cooler vs in front of it?

As long as you have clearance and it doesn't touch the cooler you should be fine to mount it behind just fine. If it can touch and vibrate against it you run the risk of it eventually wearing a hole in the cooler, which would be not good.

i haven't towed with my BD yet, but i see about 140F for trans normally on my v8.

and 190F normally for coolant, although i've been dipping down into the 180s now that it's cooling off down here in texas

I too have the Bully Dog and the transmission temp is one of my favorite features of it. I have never broken 205 with the stock radiator towing a 5000 lb travel trailer over an 11000 ft pass in summer. I am amazed at the towing capacity for being a V6. When do people normally have issues with the radiator? I am very pleased with the performance of the stock radiator. Does the extended warranty change anyones mind about doing all these bypasses and radiator replacements?
