twin mattress hauling

Postby azaizai » Fri Oct 10, 2014 7:53 am

I've done a few searches and have gotten some conflicting dimensions...just thought I'd post and see what I could get directly.

I need to haul 2 to 4 twin size mattresses/box springs. Twin size dimensions are 38x75. Obviously the mattress are a little squishy, but the boxes are not. I have an old set of mattress/springs so if necessary we only have to bring home one set, but we will be replacing both.

From what I've read/measured the rear cargo area maxed out is 40x75? Is this in a driveable position? Or is that seats maxed forward and only enough room for vern troyer to drive the car? Granted I'm married to a 5'2" almostamidget...but just curious.

I would just strap the boxes to the roof...but its pouring down rain today...and of course we need to the bed ready by the evening.

Muchas Gracias!

when I fold all the seats flat, I end up with 73" of usable space with the drivers seat back as far as it will go (where I normally keep it). I also have the back reclined quite a bit. So I think it's doable if you can move the front seat more upright and forward a bit. You would also gain a few inches on top of the seat cushion that is folded up against the front seat. I was measuring the flat area only but you could likely prop the mattresses on top of that. I hate hauling stuff on the roof.

Awesome, thanks for the response!

I hate hauling things on the roof too. Dont have a lot of experience with it and it seems like everything I try up there rests ever so slightly on the sunroof wind thingy.

Gonna try it at lunch, worse comes to worse I'll toss it on the roof and cinch it down with some rachet straps lol

Mattress transport was a success!

The actual mattresses fit with no real issue. All seats were laid flat and front seats pushed all the way forward. One they were loaded, we were able to put the front seats back to our regular positions without much problem due to the mattresses flexibility. The issue was length.

The box springs were more cumbersome. We fit both of them in the back, stacked atop each other. Once again, started with both seats forward but without the flexibility we had to play a little tetris. Essentially we ended up with one on the bottom pretty snuggly wedged. In order to facilitate driving without having my chin on the steering wheel, we proppped the second one up onto the tops of the folded down seat cushions and forward a bit. This required a "posture-correction" level of recline but enough leg room that my 6'4" ass could still drive. I felt like a giant with no recline (had to pull back the sunroof shade) but didnt feel dangerous or anything.
