2001 Pathfinder Rethreading the spare tire chain

The spare tire chain fell off the last time a tire was changed. I am having trouble rethreading it. I tried to remove the plate that the chain feeds through to get a better look at things but couldn't get the plate off (tried removing the 2 screws on the side of the plate, but wasn't enough). Anyone know the best way to proceed?
