New Jeep Grand Cherokee with 3.0L Diesel

Hey everyone,

So Jeep has once again come out with a 3.0L CRD diesel option for the Grand Cherokee. Damn thing is over $60k here in Canada. But apparently is supposed to kill the MPGs, and have more torque than the 5.7L Hemi V8.

Man, I wish the import guys would release a small displacement diesel in our market!

No Jeep will ever be worth that much. I tried to configure one on their site, yet while asterisks are all over the place next to the word diesel, I couldn't find one in any of the builds I tried. I didn't really look that long, but I was curious about the price.

I priced it on Jeep.com for $46k.

Available on Limited model and above.

Most likely because you're in the USA and disallow is in Canada. I've been familiar with the 3.0L CRD since Jeep put it in the previous model Grand Cherokee (WK model). I wanted one but for some reason, whether it's government related or sales projections, Jeep did not offer it in the US. Same thing in this case I presume.

By the way, that 3.0L CRD is, I believe, the same Blu-Tec diesel running in Mercedes Benz C-Class cars. It's a very nice setup.

From the reading I've done, the new 3.0 CRD ois NOT an MB engine, and it is availble in the Limited model and above in the US.

Maybe the new diesel is a Fiat product? Any word on this?

Incorrect. 3.0 CRD MB diesel was available, at least here in Canada from 2006-2008.

The new 3.0L CRD is from VM Motori which is an Italian engine maker owned 50% by Fiat and 50% by GM.

That the MB diesel wasn't available in the US. It was in 07 and 08.

They had an article in Motor Trend about the new Grand Cherokee with the diesel. It was the top of the line "Summit Edition" and is $60000 in the US.

You can get the 3.0L Diesel on the Limited 4x2 model, which has an MSRP of $41290 which includes the cost adder of the engine ($4500).

Best you can do north of the border in Canada is the Overland Edition 4x4, which MSRP is almost $64k.

They are rating the new diesel with 30 MPGs and towing 7400 lbs. That's amazing in my book.

At these prices your fuel economy is irrelevant. You will never compensate for the money spent on the rig in the first place. Sure, additional torque is nice, but heck, not at $46K. In US diesel is always sold at a premium, unlike the rest of the world where it is an economy option.

I don't quite agree with you Slavabon.

The fuel economy difference is staggering. 33MPG diesel vs 23MPG V8 Gas (similar torque value).

Based on my observations, it is evident that gas engine advertised MPGs are usually much higher than actual, whereas diesel is usually closer. Driving style has more effect on MPGs with a gas than on a diesel. (Function of torque vs HP). So the real world MPG is probably closer to 17-20MPG on the 5.7L v8.

Given the above assumption, over 10000mi, that is a 200-285 gallon difference. At $4/gallon, thats $800-1000 every 10000mi in extra cost for fuel on a gas vs a diesel. In Canada, its even more.

I'd say its worth it. That and diesels are usually more reliable, and tow better, I say its a no-brainer to go with diesel, if you can afford the up front cost.
