Yup, all over the news and multiple forums (TT especially as you'd imagine).

I want to see what the drivetrain will look like. This will need to be a 3/4 ton for sure. And with all the M226 and M205 failures over the years, it will be nice to see what they do about it.

I think that will be the biggest concern. For it to work, it must be affordable for the masses and not just the rich.

It's certainly not hard to get a truck into the $50k range today! Hell my '03 Ram stickered $54k ten years ago! For my company, I'm buying basic gas 3/4 ton Fords with rubber floors and crank-up windows that have a sticker in the $37k range. Add leather and some nice wheels and the price swells to $47k still with just a gas motor! Diesel adds $7k-$8k easily. So basically you'll be at a $60k sticker on a diesel pickup if you want more than a very basic rig. Get a little crazy with the options and I'm pretty sure you can hit $70k on just an F-250.

My guess is they'll try to get $5k-$6k for the Cummins in this. Jeep is getting $4,500 for a 3.0L Italian diesel without all the brand caché...

Personally I think a 5.0L is too big for a 1/2 ton. The JGC is rated 27mpg highway with that diesel and it's a much smaller vehicle. Additionally, there are similar sized gas SUV's now getting 27mpg.

So lets be completely optimistic (borderline nuts) and say the Titan will be rated 27mpg. You've got to really think about an extra $5k to gain 6mpg on more expensive fuel. The break-even on just the engine cost is over 300,000 miles. Granted the diesel should always be worth more but you're putting it in a niche truck that I don't think will ever sell in large quantities compared to the big brands regardless of this engine.

I'm a big diesel fan but the cost here in the US is just too much to make economic sense. When I bought my diesel VW back in 2000 the diesel engine added about $600. Some of the euro brands still add very little cost for their diesels and you can make a case for them. But adding thousands of dolllars....I just can't see the silver lining for any of these.

^ Yeah I get what you're saying. It's like deciding between a Toyota Corolla for $15k or less and get 35-40mpg, or get the Prius for over $20k to get over 45mpg.

So...is the Titan also getting a new chassis at the same time? If not, and the Titan's current V8 fits in the R51, then I can imagine an awefully cool motor swap opportunity...

Weird, I know I posted but it didn't show up for some reason. Did someone blow it away?

What I said was you can't compare a Corolla and a Titan, simply based on the capabilities of either vehicle. Same reason I drive a pathy, it does what I need it to do. A good balance of space, towing capacity, and all the other things I like about Japanese designed vehicles.

But it is based on the needs of the individual driver. I wholeheartedly agree that if a corolla gets it done for you, by all means go buy one.

And if they put this diesel powerplant into an Armada, I will buy one in about 5 seconds!

I don't think they would put this motor into the Armada. Reason being no other car company in the US has done this. Look at the Tahoe, Expedition or even landcrusier (US model). All are still running gas engines when their truck counterparts have diesel engines. Ford's Excursion stopped production I think around 2005. It was the largetst diesel SUV on the market. We also haven't seen a diesel Suburban for years.

While I think it would be great if Nissan did, I really don't see it happening.
