auto hubs

i have just finished adjusting wheel bearings on my '91 terrano/pathfinder and am having problems re-installing auto locking hubs.doing up the 6 hex head screws,the hub gets to about 1/4 to an 1/8th of an inch to seating and stops solid.i don't want to use brute force and ignorance at this stage.anyone out there got ideas.
