Torn Steering Shaft Boot

Postby akley88 » Wed Sep 25, 2013 11:02 am

So i noticed yesterday while checking my tire pressure that the boot the universal joints is ripped. the top half is pretty much gone. Im not sure what caused other then maybe the steering shaft moves to much and caught the upper control arm when im driving like an idiot. any suggestions on what to do about this.

I'd check into the source of it like what caused it. If it's not too late, you should be able to replace just the boot, and not have to replace the ITR/OTR.

Here's how I replaced my steering boot. You have to remove the tie rod end to install the new boot so I would recommend an alignment check be done to make sure your toe-in is still good.

Hopefully it’s not the CV shaft. More of a PITA, but still doable. Main thing to look for is any dirt/damage because once that happens, it becomes too late too fast.

once i saw it ive been using wd40 to clean it, then spraying white lithium grease on it to lubricate.

Ahhh, that's for the steering, yeah I always catch glimpse of it when staring in there or doing stuff.

IIRC, that's from the steering wheel/linkage.

I know what caused it. It was the upper control because of the adjustment I made for the body lift.
