Vibrations around alternator

Postby ShipFixer » Tue Jun 10, 2014 3:01 pm

Got a quick question for the class before I go look at something. The metal bits around my alternator vibrate a lot more than they used to at low RPM resulting in rattling noises. Doesn't appear to be the alternator itself from trying to move the flywheel but I wouldn't rule out the internals.

As I go to look at it, could this either be a dying alternator or a bad motor mount near there? No bad bearing noises or anything else and my belt tensioner is relatively new.

They had a TSB regarding vibration at idle due to bad engine mounts, so it could be your problem.

I'm thinking that's what it is. How big of a job is it to replace them? I'm away from home north of LA but tthere's an auto hobby shop on base. Could I do it myself Friday afternoon before leaving town, or could the Nissan dealership here do it within a day?

Or is it more difficult than a small vehicle where you roll a jack under it to support the motor, remove, replace and drive away?

Is it pretty much the same as the Frontier as per the thread here?

One more question, anyone try the PRG polyurethane mounts? If I can't get the Nissan ones locally I may order those...

Just ordered them. Would have been $300 locally for Nissan, $200 from Courtesy Parts for Nissan, or $149 plus shipping for PRG.

I'll risk the slight increase in low frequency vibration for survivability :-D
