Anyone else sample their oil?

Postby skinny2 » Thu Jul 09, 2015 5:27 am

I just got my latest results and honestly can't believe how consistently clean this engine runs at 10k mile intervals. Just wondering if other are seeing similar results.

I have during my last 2 oil changes. First one was 3,000 miles, full mobil 1 synthetic. Guys told me to go to 4,500. Second was then at 4,500, and now they've said to go to 6,000 miles. Still had plenty of life on each one, so I'm hoping I can keep moving up towards 10K.

I had extremely high iron on first sample, but it washed out with second sample, other than that, very good, clean engine.

Let's hope for 10K next.

They probably won't bump you up that much at once just for their liability purposes. This engine is rated for 7,500 intervals on conventional oil and that's what I've done since day one but always used synthetic. Once my warranty was up I did 8k and then to 10k. I could easily go higher based on the results but I'm comfortable with this particularly since my towing is erratic. This last interval had about 500 miles of towing and the sample was consistent with the prior that had none.

My iron is usually 9-10. Avg is 11 based on 5,700 miles.

Who are you using for your oil sampling?

I'm not sure if the color really tells you much. Even at 10k mile intervals, the oil is always amber/golden brown on my PF. You could easily have high wear metals and not know it based on color. Usually, if the color changes due to a problem, it's from other contaminants like silicon (dirt) or an additive.

My wife's MDX has black oil within a couple thousand miles. The sampling has always come back well within spec on her car at 8k-9k miles, but it's not as clean as the PF at 10k.

I have used Blackstone many times with my former Toyota 4Runner and they seemed to have some real good recommendations. I have not used them yet on my 2012 Pathy but plan to after this summers hard towing season. Frankly it's sort of a waste for me as when my Mobil 1 turns 6,000 miles my skin starts to crawl so the most I run it is around 6,500 miles. I just don't feel comfortable running it longer no matter what my oil analysis says. By the way the color of the oil is no indication of the oils condition. Although if it were as black as tar on the dipstick I would Chang it. My Pathy oil at 6,500 miles looked just a golden brown on the stick.

My samples are also always good but they are generally low miles, sub-5k, but high age, up to 1 1/2 years.

I have Sample kit myself and after this summers towing season I will sample the oil at say around 5000 miles. Should be interesting to see how it looks with some hard use.
