High mileage and got the rattle at 1500 rpm

Postby Felstmiester » Wed Aug 26, 2015 10:27 am

Hi all. Over in the uk. My pathy has always had the common engine tappety sound when engines cold that goes away after less than 5 mins of driving. Just lately I'm sure it's got very slightly louder and takes a little bit longer to go away. I thought it may need some fresh oil so spoke to a good friend that owns a garage, explained the rattle and booked it in for oil service. He rang a few hours later and said its pointless doing the oil change because he thinks the noise is the big ends on its way out or a piston.

It still pulls hard and have read numerous posts about the dreaded engine rattle being down to injectors and people just living with it. Also read about the ecu/fuel pump reset. I tried the reset and the noise more or less disappeared. 3 days later it's back!

Not sure weather to try and sorce a new engine, go ahead with the oil change hoping its a sticky lifter, or just live with it and hope it doesn't throw a piston through the side of the car.

Does it smoke? White or black when flooring could be injectors but diesels always knock

I've also read about the pattern fuel filter causing problems but would of thought if this was the culprit the truck wouldn't perform like it does. Do the d40's have the weak bottom end problem that the d22's had? Over here in the uk there's company's advertising stronger ARP bottom end rebuilds for the d40's but didn't the they had this problem.

When I read about the d22 bottom end issues and how they started rattling before they blew, I'd say mine is showing those signs. But it seems on all the d40 forums the explanation to others issues are exactly the same but there either saying its a fuel filter, injectors or being told its normal by a dealer. Some of the above I've read about have done less than 50k.
