Humming tire noise?

The noise sounds like I'm driving with off road tires or mud tires but I have reg BF radials.This started getting louder everyday this week and I cant figure it out. Its when I drive straight and left turns but quiets down on right hand turns. Any ideas?

any sense of abnormal tire wear? Sounds like they've worn down. Check alignment.

Sounds like you could have a bad wheel hub (bearing).

You can also turn each wheel by hand and listen with a mechanic's stethoscope.

I just had my bearing changed and was exactly the same as what you described. Except the opposite side, I think the fact it goes away when you turn one way gives it away. Bad bearing on your right side , cost me £170 for bearing and fitting.

Thanks all, I checked my tires this morning and no sign of abnormal wear. Its definitely coming from the rear too. I think I'll investigate the wheel hubs/bearings. I'll check tonight when I get home from work.

Could possibly be u-joints on the driveshaft as well.

I just did the u-joints last May, but I'll look at those too.

if you suspect the tires, you might see (hear) if the noise changes with higher and/or lower tire pressures on the same stretch of road

Well its definitely the bearings/hub on the drivers side rear wheel. I did the shake test and yeah... it moved. Has anyone changed their hubs, is it that hard, do I get the one with or without the sensor? I found some on Rock Auto for around $120-$130

I replaced one on mine a while back and remember it being pretty straightforward. A few bolts, a ton of Liquid Wrench and some elbow grease. Its basically like doing your pads & rotors with an extra step.

I got my hub assembly from Courtesy Parts ($160) and it came with the ABS sensor. Since you're ripping everything out, may as well do the sensor, too.

Might be helpful to download the service manual so you torque, grease and thread-lock everything to spec.
