dropping auto transmission

Postby abendean » Wed Sep 09, 2015 3:24 pm

My friend is replacing the auto transmission on my R51 YD25... he is struggling to remove the cross bar (cross plate?) which goes under the gearbox.... he has opened the bolts but its not dropping down. he tried to knock it with hammer as well. any idea to remove it?

Thanks

I guess you are talking about A/T cross member. This one has VERTICAL bolts holding the A/T assembly on the middle, while the cross member itself is fixed to chasis with two long HORIZONTAL bolts, holding crossmember on each side to the chasis.
On Right Hand models, cross member also has two smaller bars, extending to the back of the vehicle. Each of those has one VERTICAL bolt at the end.

Here are also step-by-step instructions from service manual:
1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.
2. Remove engine cover.
3. Remove A/T fluid level gauge.
4. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the A/T assembly.
CAUTION:
● Do not subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it.
● Do not disassemble.
● Do not allow metal filings, etc. to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area.
● Do not place in an area affected by magnetism.
5. Remove front valance center, engine undercover front, engine undercover middle and engine under cover rear.
6. Remove front cross member.
7. Remove main muffler.
8. Remove front and rear propeller shaft.
9. Remove starter motor.
10. Remove control cable and bracket.
11. Disconnect fluid cooler tube.
12. Remove A/T fluid charging pipe from A/T assembly.
13. Remove O-ring from A/T fluid charging pipe.
14. Plug up openings such as A/T fluid charging pipe hole, etc.
15. Remove rear plate cover from rear plate.
16. Turn crankshaft to access and remove the four bolts for drive plate and torque converter.
CAUTION:
When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of engine.
17. Support A/T assembly using a transmission jack.
CAUTION:
When setting transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against drain plug.
18. Remove protector (Fuel tube), and then disconnect fuel tubes.
19. Remove A/T cross member.
20. Remove engine mounting insulator (rear) from A/T assembly.
21. Disconnect the following:
● A/T assembly harness connector
● ATP switch connector
● Neutral 4LO switch connector
● Wait detection switch connector
● Transfer motor connector
● Transfer control device connector
● Transfer terminal cord assembly connector
22. Support transfer assembly using a transmission jack.
23. Remove the wiring harness from bracket.
24. Remove bolts fixing A/T assembly to engine assembly.
25. Remove A/T assembly with transfer from the vehicle.
CAUTION:
● Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping.
● Secure A/T assembly to a transmission jack.
26. Remove A/T air breather hose.
27. Remove transfer assembly from A/T assembly.
