VQ40DE header info

Postby smj999smj » Mon Sep 28, 2015 5:09 am

I think I asked this a while back but didn't get an answer. Has anyone put headers on their V6 R51 yet?

Does anyone even make headers for the VQ40DE V6?

I bet with some mods you could really make this motor scream! Normally aspirated typical hot rod tricks.

Nismo made headers but they are discontinued. However, OBX makes them and they are similar to the Nismo design. I thought about getting headers but I've read you have to pull the engine to do the right side. It seems if you pull the wheel well liner, there "may" be enough room to do it without pulling the engine, but I would like to hear some input from someone who has done it.

4.0 Header

AFe makes a header. Looks to be equal length with thick flanges. Replacing the header is a lot of labor. I heard about 4-5 hours.

OBX makes nock offs. I do not believe they design anything themselves. I stay away from such companies.

I have access to a fully equipped shop with lifts and air tools, which is a big help. I just don't feel like pulling the engine to install headers, if that's what it takes. If I can slip it in there without doing much more than maybe unbolting the motor mount on the right side and jacking the side of the engine up a bit, I would seriously consider doing it.

If V8 owners are able to do it without removing the engine, the V6 should be fine. I've read a few install threads and it seems as if there's plenty of room for V8 owners. Have you checked the Frontier/Xterra forums?

Also, here is a google search through ClubFrontier that shows some other info.

The general consensus of several sources seem to agree that the engine does not have to be removed or lifted to install headers. There is some debate on which is better, OBX or Doug Thorley; each has its good points. Something I'll have to think about for a little while before I make my decision.

SMJ if you do it are you going to go all out and install hot cams, port the heads, etc etc? What are your goals?

Cams and ported heads?! That's way too much work! I'm thinking more of freeing up the exhaust and intake and maybe an UPREV tuner. Nothing crazy... That's "if" I go that route.
