Engine Oil Leak

Postby Thupertrooper » Mon Oct 26, 2015 7:52 pm

does anybody have any sort of engine oil leak?
my pathfinder has had a minor oil leak on the oil filter base/ oil cooler area but i havnt tracked it down completely.
just recently started getting worse, was wondering if the oil cooler gasket is a common fix?
going to do oil change soon planning to fix it

Oil filter has a raised edge around sealing surface on engine block, with a rubber hose leading to the bottom, whose end is located few inches away from oil drain plug on the bottom.
If you would have a leak at the oil filter gasket, then it would drip through this rubber hose to the floor, so it's easy to diagnose this particular type of leakage. Just turn your wheels driver-side when parked and you should be able to see the drip rubber hose at passanger's side bottom protection plate. Wipe it off and leave a piece of dashboard paper under it to catch possible drips.

Maybe some leak at oil filter area can be avoided by:
- carefully cleaning the gasket seat surface on engine block when changing filter
- tighten oil filter only by hand, as much as it goes. I never use any tools to tighten it, and it always holds...while at removal I usually need to use a strap undo tool, as it just fails to unscrew by hand
- soak oil filter gasket with few drops of engine oil before mounting
