Rebuilt trans or trade?

Postby Kestral » Mon Nov 23, 2015 7:19 am

I have mentioned before I have a friend with a R51 Pathy its an 09 with 150,000 miles and his trans just went from cross contamination. (if he listened to me this would not have happened!) Anyway he wanted me to post on here for him do you think it is worth it to get a rebuilt trans and a new radiator? or should he just dump the truck? Even though it is high millage the motor and everything ells was running great before the trans quit.

It's not worth a lot with a bad transmission. On the other hand, these are still pretty valuable in running order. I think it would make sense to replace the transmission as cheaply as possible and then decide. Buying a complete rebuilt unit will be expensive. At such high miles, I'd probably look for a reputable transmission shop that will bench rebuild it. I'd be surprised if it's more than $3k.

Another option is to look for a salvage yard transmission. This will be risky given the history of the radiator issues, but if you can locate an '11-'12 model you'd probably be pretty safe. There are a few low mileage examples on Ebay that would be under $2k delivered.

.........that's a shame
at this point, he'll have to estimate the repair cost of a reman trans, new radiator, labor & materials, less its' salvage value vs a comparable replacement truck which can also have its' problems
just curious, what does he say about ignoring you on your recommendation now that he's faced with a 6-7K repair expense which could have been easily avoided? :?

Ya know at first he would not tell me the cause of his truck stopping dead on the road he just said it died! And when I asked what was wrong or rather what did the dealer say when you had it towed there he was like "I don't know something with the trans!" He did not want to say what it was or what caused it. Now he keeps asking me for advice on what to do. I am nice and don't do the old "Told you so!"

Not everybody can take advice, and even if they listen, they may not have the ability to execute it.

I think you are doing the right thing. No skin off your nose anyways, as its not like you have to foot the bill on the repair.

Same thing happened to my sister in her 99 civic. I told her to get the timing belt checked, and replaced because she was at that mileage. She didn't listen, and it popped and took out 3 valves in the process. After taking it to the dealer herself, she finally called me when they said it needed a new engine and it would cost over $2k plus labor.

Had it towed to my neighbor's place and he had it back together for about $900 all in. I did have to put some time into it, though.

A little update here my friend brings his R51 Pathfinder to a local so called transmission specialist and ....Wait for it! ....Wait for it! .... The trans is shot!

So the so called expert says if he finds a used or rebuilt trans on line he will install it for $600.00. My friend calls and tells me the news so I ask him "what about the radiator and the cross contamination issue?" The guy said nothing about that so it must not be a problem I am going to just look for a nice used or rebuilt trans.... I was like like Tony I don't care what he says if you put a trans in that truck without replacing that radiator you are a fool! And it will just fail again!

Tony says he just does not want to spend the extra cost of replacing the radiator and the trans guy did not mention that was the cause so I am not going to change it!

Don't be a fool Tony go down there and open the radiator cap and have your trans expert check the fluid I am sure it's got trans fluid mixed in. And let's just say for a moment I am wrong and it did not cross contaminate. With 150K on a 2009 Pathy that is subject to cross contamination issue why take that chance just replace the radiator.

At this moment we are in a holding pattern ... Frankly part of me almost wants him to get the new trans without replacing the radiator and this time I will say told you so!

nothing personal, Kestral, but your friend doesn't sound like the crispest cracker in the box
 maybe this time he might be willing to keep the old radiator and by-pass the internal cooler? :!:

Maybe you could share some links with your friend. Since he apparently thinks you're stupid. This is a very well documented issue and the following link covers a lot of info and has links to other articles regarding the problem: http://www.nissanproblems.com/trends/co ... nsmission/

Nissan used to have the details of the extended warranty on their website but it's gone. Which makes me wonder if the class-action hasn't proceeded anyway. I like Nissan's vehicles, but the company is not much better than VW when it comes to customer service.
