Engine swap

Postby davidjd2409 » Sat Dec 19, 2015 3:30 pm

Just curious if anyone had tried to swap the 4.0 to a 5.6 my engine died on me and has internal parts that busted need a new one and was thinking what'd the best route to go? swap for a 5.6 or put a used one or remanufactured one, and turbo the 4.0

what year pathy do you have?

Would also involve a ratio change in the rear end, and front if 4wd.

You'd be better off replacing the VQ40DE. If you want a V8, it would be cheaper and a lot easier to buy an R51 that come with the V8. To swap in the V8, you would need a whole lot more than just the engine, including the ECM and wiring harness.

I dunno, but considering how cheap you can buy a salvaged Pathfinder....if I decided to keep this thing forever I may just go buy one. I've seen low mileage '11-'12 models sell pretty cheap. Besides body damage and blow airbags the power train was likely fine.

Not necessarily a ratio change, but certainly beefing it up with a V8 units from either an Armada, Titan, or V8 R51.

There's been some V8 guys swap in a V6 differential to get a taller gears. I don't think they've had any strength problems.

Not sure about that, it be a lot easier to just swap an Armada(Big Tow) or QX56 diff (any) to retain the beefier ring gear/diff assembly and still get the 3.36 ratio. That's what I did and everyone else I know. Haven't heard it the other way around.

Yeah, my memory was way off on that. They were swapping Armada gears. It was just the ratios that were the same between the Armada and V6 PF. I wouldn't mind driving a PF with this mod. When I was buying mine, the V8 didn't feel any stronger than the V6. Actually less gutsy at passing which is important to me with the roads I drive.
