Transmission Issue after fluid change

Postby Frank rizzo » Thu Dec 24, 2015 1:09 pm

I have a 2005 pathy and went and changed the tranny fluid this morning and after it was done the transmission was slipping like mad. Then I drove it a little bit and the cel came on. pulled the codes and got p1759 and p1764.
was running and driving fine before this. The radiator is fine. I'm at a loss right now. Valve body maybe???? Thanks

Was this just a drain and fill (~4qts)? I assume you used the Nissan Matic-J, Matic-S, or comparable?

which type? There are several... I think I've found the Valvoline synthetic product you are using on their website. It does say it is approved for Nissan Matic-J, but interestingly enough, it does not mention Matic-S, which is a full synthetic version of the Nissan Fluid, and replaces Matic-J

I have used the following product for over 5 years with great success:

This fluid shows compatibility with both Matic-J and Matic-S.

However, I think the first one should be 'close enough'. Double check the level of the fluid to ensure its not under/overfilled. I'd do another drain and fill (you'll need another gallon, the one I posted is ~$20 at Walmart for a gallon). See what comes out.

You might try resetting the codes, unplug the battery for 10 minutes or so, and try again. Pretty hard to believe a simple drain/fill could cause code-setting problems. Seems like a sensor is goofy or was tripped up somehow by the fluid level change.

Matic "S" is simply Matic "J" with additional friction modifiers. It was designed for the 7-speed Infiniti transmission and superceded Matic "J," so it is compatible. Anything that is "J" compatible should work in the R51. That said, I always used Valvoline Maxlife ATF.

Well it now has a complete rebuild in it.... I bought it used and the shop said that the cooler failed and they must of just flushed the trans and put a new radiator in. There was a ton of rust inside the trans. 3000 out the door for rebuild.. I didn't think it was that bad.
Thanks for all your help guys.

sorry you had this happen to you.

Wondering what mileage you are at? There is a chance you could file a claim with Nissan if you are in the extended coverage period...

Did you rebuild your existing or put a rebuilt unit in? Not too bad considering I guess. Also, does the $3000 include a new radiator?

I agree sounds like a great deal. What kind of warranty on the rebuild?
