Regular or premium, Yes again...

Postby 00pathySE » Mon May 16, 2016 5:40 pm

So I noticed Nissan didn't start recommending premium until 2007. My 06 owners manual recommends 87, but for "increased vehicle performance use 91 minimum".

Anyone know why they started recommending premium (minimum 91) in 2007? Did anything change??

I'm still on my first tank of gas which I filled with 87. I noticed the slightest ping when I pulled away from the driveway under light load. I'm wondering if it was really a ping or just some random noise.

I've used 87 octane in my 06 and 08 for a long time without any problems. Recently I reprogrammed the 06 with a Superchips tuner to a 93 Performance tune, so now I'm using premium in that.

Tuner sounds cool. Do you get better mileage with that?

Funny how for 2007+ the hp and torque ratings also dropped to to 266/288 from 270/291.

I actually did get another mile per gallon using the 93 performance tune. Of course, I'm paying more for the premium gas. I did try the "gas saver" tune for a day as I'm going on a trip this weekend, but it just seemed to sap all of the fun out of it! I instead went to the 87 octane tune with a 2* bump in the timing, which wasn't bad.
