4 Wheel Hi Clunk Sound

Postby Madcow » Mon Dec 12, 2016 9:43 am

I was driving in snowy conditions yesterday and decided to put our 2009 Pathfinder in 4 wheel Hi.

As I was driving I would hear a clunk/bang every several miles with maybe a subtle jerk. It was like something was pounded the bottom of the vehicle.

It would only happen every once and a while, but ran quiet and no issues.

I put it in 2 wheel that last 1 1/2 hr of the trip and never heard the sound but it happened about 6 times the first couple hours of the trip.

Any ideas?

Clunking is never good!!

I would have a shop open up the rear diff and take a look at the spider gears.
My guess is that they might be chewed up and need to be replaced!
