I would think part of the reason is as a shield to keep debris, mud, stones, etc., from getting to the front of the engine.

I remove the front skid and put a half sliced yaourt pot under the oil filter instead of the little skinny plate who is not long enought anyway to catch oil form filter when you unscreew it.
no oil drop anywhere except in the catchcan...
