2005 Pathfinder 4.0 Engine Noise

Postby Geo05pathfinder » Sat Mar 08, 2008 7:38 am

I have a '05 Pathfinder with 43,000 miles. The engine has started making a metallic whirring noise at idle. It is not a belt squeak, but sounds like a turbine of a jet engine.

I have read a couple of posts on other sites, and they are saying this noise is the result of plastic camshaft belt tensioners in the engine breaking down prematurely. I was wondering if anyone else on this forum has experienced this noise and if they can confirm the camshaft tensioner problem. I have an appointment for service next week, and I would like to have some ammunition when I talk to the service manager.

I would also like to see how many others have had this problem and maybe contact Nissan as a group and get some resolution that way.

Thanks
George

There may be a Nissan tech bulletin that applies to your noise...

http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/Knowledg ... =10&page=2

NTB07-042 VQ ENGINE; BUZZING / WHINING NOISE
ALL NISSAN MODELS WITH VQ ENGINE; BUZZING / WHINING NOISE FROM TIMING CHAIN AREA
There is a buzzing / whining noise coming from one or both secondary timing chain /camshaft sprocket areas. The noise may increase with engine speed (RPM).

Thanks for the response. I went in and looked at the service bulletin and I think it explains my problem. I am taking it with me to the dealer for the repair.

I have an '06 with only 7500 miles on it (that's right, 7500!), and I've noticed the same noise. It is not a loose belt squeel. The noise occurs at startup in cooler ambient temperatures, then goes away after driving about five miles. And, that's the rub. It's about that far to the nearest dealer, so duplicating it for them is problematic. Guess I'll just have monitor it for a while.
