Dealer installed NEW transmission, not radiator?

Postby StaticFilter » Mon Jun 11, 2012 7:07 pm

When we bought our 05 V6 4x4, the transmission was done for. Had about 88,000 miles on it. one of the terms of our purchase was they replace the transmission, they did that, now how do i tell if they did the radiator also or if the old radiator is just killing the new tranny?

You can start by checking the color of the transmission oil. If it is not a strawberry milkshake, then I suggest you do the transmission bypass to avoid having any issues in the future from the radiator.

Also, find out what was wrong with the old transmission. Talk to the dealer's service dept. and/or technician that replaced the trans. Ask if it was due to an internal mechanic failure of the transmission or due to coolant contamination of the fluid.

Bought the PF from a dealership BTW...The PF would NOT accelerate properly, wouldn't shift on the test drive, had 4x4 issues etc...

I do have a 1-800-RADIATOR & AC sticker on the top of my Radiator which gives me hope that it's an aftermarket Radiator and won't kill the brand new tranny

Thoughts?
I have NOT checked my tranny fluid yet, I assume there's not a dipstick for that? :)

The dipstick is on the passenger side of the engine. You will have to remove the 10 mm nut that is holding it on.

Sounds like an aftermarket radiator for sure; if it were the original radiator, it would have a "Calsonic" label on the top of the tank.

So should I have any reason to fear future failure?

tough one to answer.........
any radiator could fail.
and any un-bypassed radiator could take the transmission with it, if the failure were to involve allowing coolant into the transmission oil.

I wouldn't be worried about it since it wasn't made by Calsonic. All automatic transmission equipped vehicles...or all that I know of...are equipped with cooler tubes integral of the radiator from the factory and has been so for decades. On the whole, they've been very reliable (even Calsonic's prior to 2004). For whatever reason, Calsonic has engineered two poorly designed radiators: the radiator used in the R51 Pathy/Xterra/Frontier (cooler tubes crack) and the one used in the Titan (bottom tanks leak and/or crack).
