2005 Pathfinder transmission problem

Postby markscalise » Tue Apr 02, 2013 5:55 am

OK, at 115,000 miles I think I'm starting to experience the well-known radiator/transmission problem. My mechanic will tell me tomorrow, but at this mileage, do I have any recourse under any of the extended warranties or any other Nissan-sponsored programs? What about class-action suits?

Nope. Extended warranty ends at 100k miles. And then it only covered your costs exceeding $3,000. It wouldn't hurt to see if a dealer would be willing to help you out...but I wouldn't expect anything unless you have a good relationship with them.

I would hold onto receipts and perhaps send a letter to Nissan requesting reimbursement. Not a likely outcome but puts you on record with them. There could be more law suits surrounding this as well and you could get reimbursed down the road.

Thanks. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can at least do the bypass and flush out the tranny, and get a few more miles out of it before it craps out completely.

Just curious how you discovered the problem and what it's doing? I take it the transmission is just shifting funny at this point? You might be ok if it wasn't driven much with the contaminated fluid. I would do a couple flushes (make sure you use the correct fluid) as it's very hard to get all the fluid out even with a flush.

Noticed that at around 50-60 mph (getting on the highway) that it felt sluggish, like it should be downshifting to rev higher, and it's not doing that. I can manually shift down to 3rd and get the extra rev if I want. I just noticed this for the first time yesterday.

For folks who have done this, is it correct that the power flush should NOT be employed? How many quarts of fluid do you have to go through to thoroughly flush the transmission?

So it turns out it wasn't the radiator/tranny issue at all, but was a U-joint problem. All this has got me thinking though that I should do the bypass anyway.

Yes you should. Cheap insurance with no real drawbacks.
