Maybe they mean "crank" seal instead of "cam" seal? If it states they had to reseal the rear timing cover, that would explain why they would recommend the chains, as they would have to be removed to remove the rear cover. I have seen rear covers needing to be resealed due to leaks on VQ30DE and VQ35DE engines, but haven't heard of any on the VQ40DE engines so far. They are similar in design, so it definitely possible.

If I recall correctly my Nissan dealership in Virginia had seen some rear seal leaks. They thought that was going to be the next big issue after the cam chain tensioner for both the V-6 and the V-8.

I wonder what the cost is to do the work? There's quite a few high mileage PF's around here and not sure i've seen this one before. 77k on the OP's rig....seems pretty odd at such low mileage. I'm almost to 100k and had mine in the air yesterday to change all the fluids. Not a drop of fluids leaking anywhere. Hoping to get another two years/50k miles of trouble free driving.

Update

For those eagerly awaiting the result:

Spoke with a lawyer about my situation and he advised me that we needed to 1) let the dealer who did the work look at the vehicle before anyone else and 2) we have a decent case.

Turns out, after reviewing the service order that the dealer performed an engine oil flush (they had gotten "approval" from my wife because the engine was "dirty" and this was a necessary fix). We pointed out to them the Nissan tech article where Nissan basically says never to oil flush a Nissan engine.

That all being said, they looked at the vehicle. Decided it had a bad rod knock. Took apart the lower end and found that one set of rod bearings had welded themselves to the crank. No repairs to be made. Their explanation was lack of oil pressure due to an unknown reason. My explanation was that their oil flush knock a bunch of crap loose and something clogged an oil passage.

Ultimately we settled. They replaced the engine with a reman long block. I paid 1/2 the cost of the long block and no labor. They additionally replaced my radiator under warranty and did a very nice job of detailing the vehicle. Got the vehicle back on Saturday and put about 200 miles on it so far, all seems OK so far.

Not the perfect solution, but I think all in all I'm satisfied with the result. It certainly had a lot less risk than going to court.

Not too bad. Did you end up paying the lawyer anything?

Certainly could have come out worse. Honestly, dropping (i'm assuming) a couple grand on a new engine isn't the worst investment.

No. It was part of my free consultation.
