what diffs

Postby patomwazi » Mon Sep 16, 2013 11:12 am

new in the 4x4 field just wanted to know...i have a 2008 i think its the S trim line...well...bottom of the pile really...but it is 4x4...my question is...does it come with LSD in the rear axle..or does that only come in the OFF-ROAD trim line...and another stupid question for the off-roading specialists....when one wheel gets bogged...lets say in the sand..should flooring the darn pedal send power to the none spinning wheels..(given you have LSD axles)?...if i correctly understood how LSD axles work...

make sense?!?! :? :?:

To check and see if you have an LSD diff, jack up the rear wheels and put the trans in neutral. Spin one of the rear wheels forward. If the opposite wheel also spins forward, you have LSD. If it spins in the opposite direction, you have an open carrier. With an open rear, power is sent to the wheel with least traction. With an LSD, when one starts to slip, both will start to spin forward.

ok...totally confused now...jacked up the car rotated the wheels and only the wheel i rotated moved no rotation from the other wheel....pls someone explain...looking under...am i correct to assume that it uses some braking action to control slippage or is it clutches in the diff itself...and what are these splines for that are outside the diff...(pirated image of GOTGOO's axle)

im betting you have an open diff. the traction control uses the brakes to help with traction when it senses slip or it cuts power.

And is that feature standard on all 05+ pathfinders?

I would have thought LSD or some form of it should be standard in all cars designed with off-road driving in mind actually and/or some form of diff locking mechanism...remember the old days of getting out and having to manually lock the hubs

I agree, at least an e-locker that comes on the solid axle versions (Xterra/Titan/Frontier).

Even though the old days you weren't locking the diffs, just the hubs, as in they weren't equipped with lockers, just prepping them to be put in 4WD.

"Off-pavement, the Pathfinder lineup is headlined by the new SE Off-Road 4x4, which comes standard with a two-speed transfer case, hill-descent control, hill-start assist, a four-wheel limited-slip system, 265/75R-16 BFGoodrich tires, Rancho shocks, and 9.2 inches of ground clearance."

The "splines" on the outside of the diff are ABS rings for the anti-lock brake system.

thanks alot guys...really appreciate you guys trying to clear up this cotton wool between my ears.......so would it be correct to suggest that all R51 p/finders come with some sort of LSD feature that uses the ABS system on the rear axle except the Off-Road trim that has it in both front and rear axle...

thanks alot guys...apologies if my questions seemed kinda dumb.....got interested with this LSD subject cause the other day was pulling a tow truck that got stuck in the sand (stupid idiot trying to take shortcut through to the main road) and put it on 4HI and rear left wheel dug itself in...put 4LO...and it just kept spinning...one guy passed by and asked if i locked the diffs and yes i was pretty sure at 4LO axles are locked...now about locked diffs...mmm...was right to think that my '08 pathy for sure doesnt have lockable diffs but LSD...i was sure it had...but not after this incident...oh yes was able to pull the guy out eventually but was really interested to know what i had under the car..just want to learn thats all and this info doesnt seem readily available on google...and the dealer here know jerk-shi* about their products....

Pretty sure all 4WD models have it in front and rear. Mine is an LE (non OR version) and it also has it in front. Also, same goes for the xfer case, all 4WD's have a 2 speed xfer case, no matter the trim.

Hill-descent control, hill-start assist, 265/75R-16 BFGoodrich tires, Rancho shocks, and 9.2 inches of ground clearance are specific to the OR version.
