Battery Jump FAIL = Disconnected Wire + Dead Radio

Postby sunnypath » Tue Aug 04, 2015 7:57 pm

2006 Pathfinder LE: A battery jump went bad when the negative jumper was connected to a metal pipe causing smoke and fireworks on the other side of the engine while superheating the jumper cable connections. As a result, a green wire where the smoke originated became disconnected (ground to AC pipe?) and the radio will not turn on even with a new battery installed. So far vehicle is running fine and other electrical components are working and no fuses are showing blown.

Pictures attached. Appreciate any help with the post-mortem on what happened and steps to take from here with the car, green wire, radio, etc...

Thanks in advance!

I bet you popped the fuse for your radio. Its probably a 10 amp fuse under the hood, but also could be a fuse on the radio unit itself. Have a look for it in all of the fuse locations (under hood and under dash) and replace and I think your issue will be solved.

I know people always say not to connect the booster cable to the battery negative terminal, but that's how I've always done it, with good results. If you really don't want to do that, I suggest the inside lip of the fender under the hood seems to work.

I checked the fuses under the glove. I'll check under the hood.

What should I do about that wire?

I'm at work so had to do some voodoo to get the pics to work.

Definitely replace the wire that burned up. Its a ground wire for the A/C lines, which are aluminum.

The one at the front (small diameter) is the high pressure side, and the big pipe by the brake booster is the low pressure line. Pretty sure that burned wire attaches to a stud on the frame somewhere. I'll try to take a look at my truck tonight and see.

In the future, definitely don't use the A/C lines as a ground. There are many other good grounds you can find.

Radio is working. It was a blown 20a fuse under the hood.

As for the wire, I'm not 100% certain where it should be attached. Should I just solder it to the area where I think best? May need to solder a patch wire to increase length a bit. We'll see.

nice. I did this on my 98 civic once. Glad you got it figured out.

Were you the jumper or the jumpee?
