Boot And rear glass gas strut replacement

Postby Kael2001 » Thu Mar 24, 2016 12:37 pm

My rear door and rear window sagged a little ever since I got the car and I finally got around to changing the gas struts.
Found a nifty set here:
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-of-4-Tailga ... 3141631008
That includes all 4 for less than buying them both separate.

It was a simple job (could have done with an extra hand to hold the boot open when one was removed but managed ok on my head  )
Just pull off the old ring clip with a flat head screwdriver, apply pressure and off it pops. Then just clip the new one in, no fiddly clips to position just push fit!

Now my door and glass spring open when pulled and stay at maximum height!

I also need to fix my glass window. My trunk ( I think this is what you are calling the boot) is fine. However, it would be nice to find a slightly longer pieces as I have hit my head several times. Anyone out there find a away to get the trunk (boot) to open and rest at a higher angle?

I don't think you can change the height that the door or glass sit at... The new struts fit exactly into the space available, so if you were to try longer ones they may not fit or work properly.

That said after fitting mine, the door did sit a little higher than before

There was a thread on rear hatch lifts a while back. Someone was looking for stronger lifts and they came up with a couple of part #'s at McMaster-Carr. If my memory is correct, the factory latch lifts are 175psi. The person found 225psi and 200psi lifts, the latter I purchased for my 2006 LE. The lifts actually increase the hatch door height about an inch when opened and the door pretty much lifts itself once you get it slightly open. I remember there was a change, I think, in 2010 or 2011 regarding the thread size of the one end where the ball end screws onto. You might try searching the forum for the thread; it was pretty long, like around 12 or 13 pages, if I remember right.
The 200psi ones I purchased for my 2006 Pathfinder were #9416K148. They're $19.26 each plus shipping:

Thank you all for the info. Anyone try out the ones from the xterra site? 4 to 6 additional inches will keep head from bumping, but wonder if too high for wifey.

Need to do one of these soon or start wearing a helmet.
