Hood Shimmys in The Wind at Highway Speeds

Postby jaysonstuart » Thu Aug 25, 2016 9:24 am

Just as the title says, the hood starts to flutter in the wind when I get above 60 MPH. I have tried adjusting the bump stops on radiator mount and all they seems to do is adjust the hood height when it's closed.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? I know the hood is secure when driving but it's still a little uneasy to see it buffeting in the wind when I'm on the highway.

Thanks!

Mine and my fathers do the same thing. I think it's normal.

Do you have a bug deflector on the front of your hood? It "might" help cut down the shimmy.

+1 I've noticed the same thing. It's minor and not a problem as far as I know.

Drove me crazy when I first got mine – just on principle. I installed new bumpers and had to adjust them almost all the way out. Hood is solid now.

Adjust the bumpers out and it'll firm it up. They screw out a little ways.

Will have to try this, has been driving me nuts. Imo. It just shouldn't buffet like it does on interstate

Funny my hood has a small dent on the drivers side front corner that you have to search for to see and my hood does the dance on the highway as well I thought it was from the dent! Guess may R51's do it.

my 2007 did this when i first bought it (used). after reading numerous sites about different adjustments, i tried the simplest one first and it worked for the last year and a half. just open the hood, and give it a twist in the opposite direction of how the bar holds it up when it's open. (pull down where the bar is, push up on the opposite side). it's free, and takes 10 seconds to try.
