2005 deflector for hood with chips on paint

since purchasing the car in 05 I had the dealer install the hood bug deflector.
hood shield if that is another name for it.
one day i decided to remove it to clean that part of the hood that is covered.
I was surprised to see small paint chips along the edge of the hood.
I looked closely to see if the install was done correctly and that the rubber liner was in the correct place.
it looked correct to me since I could not make it fit any other way than the way the dealer had installed it.
it is common for this is to happen? I don;t even know how small rocks can get into the edge of the hood covered by the shield to make chips.
I do not have any pics but can provide if needed. I just have to remove the shield.
anyone else have this issue?
