Skid Plates

Postby IcedTeasley » Mon Nov 07, 2011 9:15 pm

OK guys and gals. I'm looking to armor up my under carriage over the winter so I can really abuse my PF next 4x4 season. If anyone here is running non-Nissan/Nismo skid plates, please let me know what you have and how they have worked for you so far. I'm particularly interested in feedback from any DIYers who can tell me how difficult they were to install. Thank you in advance for any help.

8mm aluminum that takes one hell of a beating. not using anymore so its taking space.

check shipping rates from UAE to wherever you are.

it cost me about $400 installed. gimme an offer and its yours. image links below

That's a big skid plate, and I bet the shipping would be killer.

Looks big. What are the dimensions and weight of that sucker? I'm going to see what the shipping cost will be if I use my company's UPS account...

There's a thread or two floating around here discussing the various options. Skids are super easy to install. I can't remember the name of the company, but there is a European company that makes aluminum skids that has their US office in Florida, I believe. They look like the same skids that used to be available on 4x4parts.com, but maybe they no longer produce them. I'll see if I can dig up the info on them at home tonight.

I found ASFIR4x4.com. They import the Euro aluminum skids. They also have a disgustingly cool bumper. I love them but they cost a fortune. I've also seen Skid Row plates on 4x4parts. I like the cost of steel but don't like having to keep touching them up every time I get back from the trail. I'm sort of torn between the two. Still holdong out for someone in our forum with some real world experience with one or the other to help sway me.

These are the ones I couldn't remember. They used to be sold on 4x4parts.com & I know I've seen posts on other Nissan forums from those who have bought/installed them. I believe I saw a thread on the FJ forum about some guy who had his whole vehicle balanced on a rock bearing down on one of the aluminum skids & it only ended up scratching it. There are certainly pro & con threads all over the place between aluminum vs steel. I just don't like the weight of steel & really don't like the fact that no matter what, they will constantly have rust. Not that I wouldn't go for steel though.

Thanks for the link. That looks like a nice set of skid plates. Do they still sell them and if so what's the price?

From what I remember, you can contact them directly to order/get a price quote. I want to say somewhere around $700-800 for a full set of skids. Not cheap by any means.

Found some!! They're Skid Row Offroad unpainted skids for Frontiers and XTerras. I bought them through 4x4Parts.com. They were about $575 shipped for all three pieces. Here are the pics. I'll do more before/after once I install them (not really in a hurry this time of year).

Shrockworks makes really nice stuff. I looked at Shrock plates before I ordered mine. I chose the Skid Row units based on their better compatibility with a stock bumper (the shrock front skid is designed to work with their bumper), better price and better availability. Shrock also could not confirm that these would fit. 4x4parts.com was positive I'd have no trouble with the Skid Row Plates.

What a nice day. I finally installed my skid plates. I came up short a couple bolts for the factory gas tank skid so that will have to wait. All the after-market gear fit up as advertised. It's no more challenging than putting on a trailer hitch for most vehilces. I can't wait to beat on them.

Not the most glamorous photo...

Iced,

They look good. Do they still allow access to the oil filter or does it require removal for oil changes?

Edit.. So you are using a Nissan Gas tank skid?
